Verb conjugations for standard and Egyptian Arabic
This page contains information about the different kinds of verbs in Arabic and conjugation tables for each kind in both standard and Egyptian Arabic.
First of all, there are two moods/tenses in Arabic.- the perfect/past (الماضي al-maaDi) - used to indicate actions that have been completed. This conjugation involves adding suffixes to the "base" form of the verb.
- the imperfect/present (المضارع al-muDaari3) - used to indicate actions that have not been completed yet. This conjugation requires the addition of prefixes and, in some cases, suffixes as well.
Note: There are no infinitive forms of verbs in Arabic. Instead, typically the masculine third-person perfect form is used (ex. درس, to study, actually means "he studied").
There are two main classes of verbs in Arabic: sound (صحيح SaHiiH) and weak (معتل mu3tall). Here's an outline of the types of verbs:
- الفعل الصحيح (al-fi3l aS-SaHiiH) Sound verbs - don't have a و or ي as one of the three root letters
- الفعل الصحيح السالم (al-fi3l aS-SaHiiH as-saalim) Regular sound verbs
- Irregular sound verbs:
- الفعل المضعف (al-fi3l al-muDa33af) Geminate/doubled verbs - where the second and third radicals of the root are the same
- دقّ daqqa - يدقّ yadiqqu (to knock)
- ردّ radda - يردّ yaruddu (to reply)
- الفعل المهموز (al-fi3l al-mahmuuz) Hamzated verbs - where ء is one of the consonants
- أكل akala - يأكل ya'kulu (to eat)
- سأل sa'ala - يسأل yas'alu (to ask)
- بدأ bada'a - يبدأ yabda'u (to begin)
- الفعل المضعف (al-fi3l al-muDa33af) Geminate/doubled verbs - where the second and third radicals of the root are the same
- الفعل المعتل (al-fi3l al-mu3tall) Weak verbs - have a و or ي as one or more of the root radicals
- الفعل المثال (al-fi3l al-mitaal) Assimilated verbs - begin with و or ي (usually و); in the imperfect and in other situations the و often disappears
- وضع waDa3a - يضع yaDa3u (to put)
- وصل waSala - يصل yaSilu (to arrive)
- الفعل الأجوف (al-fi3l al-ajwaf) Hollow verbs - the second radical is either a و or ي; in the perfect, the و or ي is replaced by an alif
- باع baa3a - يبيع yabii3u (to sell)
- عاد 3aada - يعود ya3uudu (to return)
- الفعل الناقص (al-fi3l al-naaqiS) Defective verbs - where the final root radical is either و or ي a
- نسى nasiya - ينسى yansa (to forget)
- بدا bada - يبدو yabdu (to appear, seem)
- الفعل المثال (al-fi3l al-mitaal) Assimilated verbs - begin with و or ي (usually و); in the imperfect and in other situations the و often disappears

Sound verbs

There are two types of irregular sound verbs. The first is:
Geminate/doubled verbs
الفعل المضعف (al-fi3l al-muDa33af)
Verbs where the second and third radicals of the root are the same.
Geminate verbs - perfect mood
English | Standard Arabic | Egyptian Arabic
Singular | I replied | رددتُ (radadtu) | ردّيت (raddeit) |
you (masc.) replied | رددتَ (radadta) | ردّيت (raddeit)
you (fem.) replied | رددتِ (radadti) | ردّيتي (raddeiti)

you (fem.) replied | رددتن (radadtunna)
they (masc.) replied | ردّوا (radduu) | ردّوا (radduu)
they (fem.) replied | رددن (radadna) |
Note that in fuSHa, the doubled consonant is separated into two consonants for all the conjugations except the highlighted ones. In 3ammiyya, though, the doubled consonant stays doubled.
Geminate verbs - imperfect mood
English | Standard Arabic | Egyptian Arabic
Singular | I reply | أردّ (aruddu) | أردّ (arodd) |
you (masc.) reply | تردّ (taruddu) | تردّ (tirodd)
you (fem.) reply | تردّين (taruddiina) | تردّي (tiroddi)
he replies | يردّ (yaruddu) | يردّ (yirodd)
she replies | تردّ (taruddu) | تردّ (tirodd)
Dual | we reply | نردّ (naruddu)
you reply | تردّان (taruddani)
they (masc.) reply | يردّان (yaruddaani)
they (fem.) reply | تردّان (taruddaani)
Plural | we reply | نردّ (naruddu) | نردّ (nirodd) |

they (masc.) reply | يردّون (yarudduuna) | يردّوا (yirodduu)
they (fem.) reply | يرددن (yardudna) |
In fuSHa, the doubled consonant remains doubled for the imperfect conjugations, with the exception of the second- and third-person feminine plural conjugations. In 3ammiyya, the doubled consonant again remains doubled for everything.
Sound verbs
الفعل الصحيح (al-fi3l aS-SaHiiH)
The second type of irregular sound verb is:
Hamzated verbs
الفعل المهموز (al-fi3l al-mahmuuz)
Verbs where ء is one of the root consonants.
Hamzated verbs - perfect mood
English | Standard Arabic | Egyptian Arabic
Singular | I ate | أكلتُ (akaltu) | اكلت (akalt) |
you (masc.) ate | أكلتَ (akalta) | اكلت (akalt)

they (masc.) ate | أكلوا (akaluu) | اكلوا (akaluu)
they (fem.) ate | أكلن (akalna) |
Note that in 3ammiyya, people usually say كل (kal) rather than اكل (akal). However, for the sake of direct comparison with fuSHa, I went with the latter variation for this table.
Hamzated verbs - imperfect mood
English | Standard Arabic | Egyptian Arabic
Singular | I eat | أكل (akulu) | اكل (aakul) |
you (masc.) eat | تأكل (ta'kulu) | تاكل (taakul)

Hamzated verbs 2 - perfect mood
English | Standard Arabic | Egyptian Arabic
Singular | I asked | سألتُ (sa'altu) | سألت (sa'alt) |
you (masc.) asked | سألتَ (sa'alta) | سألت (sa'alt)
you (fem.) asked | سألتِ (sa'alti) | سألتي (sa'alti)
he asked | سأل (sa'ala) | سأل (sa'al)

Dual | we ask | نسأل (nas'alu)
you ask | تسألان (tas'alaani)
they (masc.) ask | يسألان (yas'alaani)
they (fem.) ask | تسألان (tas'alaani)
Plural | we ask | نسأل (nas'alu) | نسأل (nis'al) |
you (masc.) ask | تسألون (tas'aluuna) | تسألوا (tis'aluu)

they (masc.) read | قرأوا (qara'uu) | قروا ('aruu)
they (fem.) read | قرأن (qara'na) |
Again, note that while the hamza is kept in the fuSHa conjugations, it is elided in 3ammiyya.

they (fem.) read | يقرأن (yaqra'na) |
Weak verbs
الفعل المعتلّ (al-fi3l al-mu3tall)
A verb is "weak" if one of the letters from the verb's three root letters is ا, و, or ي. There are three different classes of weak verbs; let's begin with:
Assimilated verbs
الفعل المثال (al-fi3l al-mitaal)
Verbs where the first radical is a long vowel (usually و).
Assimilated verbs - perfect mood
English | Standard Arabic | Egyptian Arabic
Singular | I arrived | وصلتُ (waSaltu) | وصلت (wiSilt) |
you (masc.) arrived | وصلتَ (waSalta) | وصلت (wiSilt)
you (fem.) arrived | وصلتِ (waSalti) | وصلتي (wiSilti)
he arrived | وصل (waSala) | وصل (wiSil)
she arrived | وصلت (waSalat) | وصلت (wiSlit)
Dual | we arrived | وصلنا (waSalna)
you arrived | وصلتما (waSaltuma)
they (masc.) arrived | وصلا (waSalaa)
they (fem.) arrived | وصلتا (waSalataa)
Plural | we arrived | وصلنا (waSalna) | وصلنا (wiSilna) |
you (masc.) arrived | وصلتم (waSaltum) | وصلتوا (wiSiltuu)
you (fem.) arrived | وصلتن (waSaltunna)
they (masc.) arrived | وصلوا (waSaluu) | وصلوا (wiSiluu)
they (fem.) arrived | وصلن (waSalna) |
Note that weak verbs beginning with a و are just like regular verbs regarding perfect conjugations.
Assimilated verbs - imperfect mood
English | Standard Arabic | Egyptian Arabic
Singular | I arrive | أصل (aSilu) | أوصل (awSil) |
you (masc.) arrive | تصل (taSilu) | توصل (tiwSil)
you (fem.) arrive | تصلين (taSiliina) | توصلي (tiwSili)
he arrives | يصل (yaSilu) | يوصل (yiwSil)
she arrives | تصل (taSilu) | توصل (tiwSil)
Dual | we arrive | نصل (naSilu)
you arrive | تصلان (taSilaani)
they (masc.) arrive | يصلان (yaSilaani)
they (fem.) arrive | تصلان (taSilaani)
Plural | we arrive | نصل (naSilu) | نوصل (niwSil) |
you (masc.) arrive | تصلون (taSiluuna) | توصلوا (tiwSilu)
you (fem.) arrive | تصلن (taSilna)
they (masc.) arrive | يصلون (yaSiluuna) | يوصلوا (yiwSilu)
they (fem.) arrive | يصلن (yaSilna) |
Note that in the imperfect mood, an assimilated verb drops its first letter in fuSHa. In 3ammiyya, however, the initial letter remains.
Weak verbs
الفعل المعتلّ (al-fi3l al-mu3tall)
The second kind of weak verb is:
Hollow verbs
الفعل الأجوف (al-fi3l al-ajwaf)
Verbs where the second radical is either a و (as with قال - يقول) or ي (as with باع - يبيع); in the perfect, the و or ي is replaced by an alif.
Hollow verbs - perfect mood
English | Standard Arabic | Egyptian Arabic
Singular | I visited | زرتُ (zurtu) | زرت (zurt) |
you (masc.) visited | زرتَ (zurta) | زرت (zurt)
you (fem.) visited | زرتِ (zurti) | زرتي (zurti)
he visited | زار (zaara) | زار (zaar)
she visited | زارت (zaarat) | زارت (zaarit)
Dual | we visited | زرنا (zurna)
you visited | زرتما (zurtuma)
they (masc.) visited | زارا (zaaraa)
they (fem.) visited | زارتا (zaarataa)
Plural | we visited | زرنا (zurna) | زرنا (zurna) |
you (masc.) visited | زرتم (zurtum) | زرتوا (zurtuu)
you (fem.) visited | زرتن (zurtunna)
they (masc.) visited | زاروا (zaaruu) | زاروا (zaaru)
they (fem.) visited | زرن (zurna) |
Note that the long vowel is dropped in all conjugations but those for the third-person singular, dual, and plural masculine. When the long vowel is dropped, it is replaced by a short version of the long consonant used in the imperfect conjugation. For example, the imperfect conjugation of زار zaara is يزور yazuuru, so a short "u" is used. Other examples: the imperfect conjugation of كان kaana is يكون yakuunu, so a short "u" is used for the perfect conjugations where the long vowel is dropped. But the imperfect conjugation of سار saara is يسير yasiiru, so a short "i" would be used in those instances.
Hollow verbs - imperfect mood
English | Standard Arabic | Egyptian Arabic
Singular | I visit | أزور (azuuru) | أزور (azuur) |
you (masc.) visit | تزور (tazuuru) | تزور (tizuur)
you (fem.) visit | تزورين (tazuuriina) | تزوري (tizuuri)
he visits | يزور (yazuuru) | يزور (yizuur)
she visits | تزور (tazuuru) | تزور (tizuur)
Dual | we visit | نزور (nazuuru)
you visit | تزوران (tazuuraani)
they (masc.) visit | يزوران (yazuuraani)
they (fem.) visit | تزوران (tazuuraani)
Plural | we visit | نزور (nazuuru) | نزور (nizuur) |
you (masc.) visit | تزورون (tazuuruuna) | تزوروا (tizuuru)
you (fem.) visit | تزرن (tazurna)
they (masc.) visit | يزورون (yazuuruuna) | يزوروا (yizuuru)
they (fem.) visit | يزرن (yazurna) |
Note that here the long vowel is dropped only for the feminine second and third-person plurals.
Weak verbs
الفعل المعتلّ (al-fi3l al-mu3tall)
The third kind of weak verb is:
Defective verbs
الفعل الناقص (al-fi3l an-naaqiS)
Verbs where the final root radical is either a و or ي. There are three types of defective verbs:
- Verbs with a و as the last root letter (ex. بدا - يبدو bada - yabdu, "to seem, appear")
- Verbs with a ي as the last root letter and a kasra (short "i") as the middle vowel in the past/perfect tense, of the form "fa3iya - yaf3a" (ex. نسى - ينسى nasiya - yansa, "to forget")
- Verbs with a ي as the last root letter and a fatHa (short "a") as the middle vowel in the past/perfect tense, of the form "fa3a - yaf3i" (ex. جرى - يجري jara - yajri, "to run")
Note that in Cairene Arabic, verbs of the type "fa3al" are often pronounced differently from standard Arabic in the past tense. While standard pronunciation would be "fa3al," Cairene pronunciation would be "fi3il." So "jara" becomes "giri."
Defective verbs 1 (third letter و) - perfect mood
English | Standard Arabic | Egyptian Arabic
Singular | I implored | رجوتُ (rajawtu) | رجيت (rageit) |
you (masc.) implored | رجوتَ (rajawta) | رجيت (rageit)
you (fem.) implored | رجوتِ (rajawti) | رجيتي (rageiti)
he implored | رجا (raja) | رجا (raga)
she implored | رجت (rajat) | رجيت (ragyit)
Dual | we implored | رجونا (rajawna)
you implored | رجوتما (rajawtuma)
they (masc.) implored | رجوا (rajawaa)
they (fem.) implored | رجتا (rajataa)
Plural | we implored | رجونا (rajawna) | رجينا (rageina) |
you (masc.) implored | رجوتم (rajawtum) | رجيتوا (rageitu)
you (fem.) implored | رجوتن (rajawtunna)
they (masc.) implored | رجوا (rajaw) | رجيوا (ragyu)
they (fem.) implored | رجون (rajawna) |
Defective verbs 1 (third letter و) - imperfect mood
English | Standard Arabic | Egyptian Arabic
Singular | I implore | أرجو (arju) | أرجو (argu) |
you (masc.) implore | ترجو (tarju) | ترجو (tirgu)
you (fem.) implore | ترجين (tarjiina) | ترجي (tirgi)

Dual | we implore | نرجو (narju)
you implore | ترجوان (tarjuaani)
they (masc.) implore | يرجوان (yarjuaani)
they (fem.) implore | ترجوان (tarjuaani)
Plural | we implore | نرجو (narju) | نرجو (nirgu) |
you (masc.) implore | ترجون (tarjuuna) | ترجوا (tirgu)
you (fem.) implore | ترجون (tarjuuna)
they (masc.) implore | يرجون (yarjuuna) | يرجوا (yirgu)
they (fem.) implore | يرجون (yarjuuna) |
Note that the verb رجا - يرجو is not used in colloquial Egyptian Arabic, except for أرجوك (arguuk), "Please; I beg you." However, I went ahead and used this verb for comparison's sake, since defective verbs with a و as their third letter in standard Arabic tend to change to a ي in dialect. For instance:
- "to complain," شكا - يشكو (šaka - yašku) in standard Arabic, becomes شكى - يشكي (šaka - yiški) in dialect.
- "to invade," غزا - يغزو (ġaza - yaġzu) in standard Arabic, becomes غزى - يغزي (ġaza - yiġzi) in dialect.
- "to invite/pray," دعا - يدعو (da3a - yad3u) in standard Arabic, becomes دعى - يدعي (da3a - yid3i) in dialect.
- "to survive, escape safely," نجا - ينجو (naja - yanju) in standard Arabic, becomes نجي - ينجي (nigi - yingi) in dialect.
Defective verbs 2 ("fa3iya - yaf3a") - perfect mood

Dual | we forgot | نسينا (nasiina)
you forgot | نسيتما (nasiituma)

they (fem.) forgot | نسيتا (nasiyataa)
Plural | we forgot | نسينا (nasiina) | نسينا (niseina) |
you (masc.) forgot | نسيتم (nasiitum) | نسيتوا (niseitu)
you (fem.) forgot | نسيتن (nasiitunna)
they (masc.) forgot | نسوا (nasuu) | نسيوا (nisyu)
they (fem.) forgot | نسين (nasiina) |
Defective verbs 2 ("fa3iya - yaf3a") - imperfect mood
English | Standard Arabic | Egyptian Arabic
Singular | I forget | أنسى (ansa) | انسى (ansa) |
you (masc.) forget | تنسى (tansa) | تنسى (tinsa)
you (fem.) forget | تنسين (tansayna) | تنسي (tinsi)

you forget | تنسان (tansaani)
they (masc.) forget | ينسيان (yansayaani)
they (fem.) forget | تنسيان (tansayaani)
